The term gained prominence during the Chicano Movement (El Movimiento) in the 1960s–70s, when Mexican-American communities organized for civil rights, labor rights, and educational equity.
For women, "Chicana" came to signify a feminist, intersectional identity that addresses the unique struggles of being both Mexican-American and female.
